Mammals

MAMMALS make up only around 8% of all animals on Earth, but they consist of a mind-boggling array of species.

They’re warm-blooded animals with a backbone (vertebra) and hair. Mammals breathe in air through their lungs (instead of breathing underwater through their gills like fish). Females produce milk to feed their babies. Most mammals live on land (terrestrial) but some also live in water (aquatic). Let’s look at a few interesting examples.

THE LEMUR

Lemurs are native to the island of and are (live in trees). Their name is derived from the Latin word , meaning , because they’re nocturnal (active mainly at night). There are ranging in size from the smallest, Madame Berthe’s mouse lemur (), which weighs only , to the Indri (), which can weigh more than .
