The incredible number and variety of the insects and small animals seen at close quarters when you have your face buried in the heather to escape the prying eyes of a suspicious old hind; the effects of light and shade on the moor; the golden eagle floating in the sky; the raucous cry of the raven that usually betokens a successful end to the stalk; the ‘plop’ of an otter as he dives into the burn; and last but not least the company of men who are “the salt of the earth”.
