#04 Creating an 808 bass

In the past decade, the 808 electronic percussion sample has seen a resurgence in many genres. Once upon a time the association was purely ’80s, because the samples get their name from the Roland TR-808 drum machine, manufactured at that time. The drum sound is very distinctive – defiantly synthetic rather than realistic – and heavily associated with danceable music. The bass samples are equally recognisable.

But more recently, 808s have been a staple of the mainstream 2010s hip-hop sound and taken on new associations.
