Of course you want to keep your child from harm, but it is important to allow him to take some risks. Naomi van Wyk, clinical psychologist and author of the book Safe and Sure says children learn about their own boundaries and skills by taking risks and exploring.

“Children who never get the chance to explore grow up with the idea that the world is dangerous and that many things are outside of their skillset. This can leave them anxious and paralysed, and they won’t want to try things as they already know they can’t,” she explains.

On the other hand, a child who is permitted to explore will learn about his own limits and develop self knowledge and confidence. This
