GREAT ESCAPE

Why do some places feel familiar at first sight? Black Barn is of course iconic, and its sturdy black cedar, board and batten exterior with white-trimmed joinery is easily recognisable throughout New Zealand – but it’s more than that – it feels familiar like home, or family.

I am incredibly lucky to have stayed at the Black Barn in beautiful Hawke’s Bay several times, but still remember the first time I walked through the entrance doors and let out a sigh of relief. There is just something about the architecture that is settling – the high stud, combined with the bulkiness of the beams, the earthy colours and the natural textures, together create a feeling of ease. It doesn’t hurt that the building is perfectly settled into the landscape, with a charming aspect out over a lawn that gently drops off into slopes of grape vines.

It is a testament to the vision of renowned local architect Andy Coltart and former Saatchi and Saatchi head Kim Thorp, who came up with the concept for Black Barn 25 years ago. It has stood the test of time magnificently, and now it, the vineyards, amphitheatre, market (open from early December), myriad accommodation options and restaurant all enjoy ongoing success.

Winemaking at Black Barn has been a huge part of the story. When the vineyard was planted, it was roughly two-thirds red, one-third white. However, the team quickly realised that the complete opposite was needed. Now, there are thirty different parcels of grapes within the vineyard.

The philosophy of winemaking at Black Barn is also very hands on. A tight-knit team carry out all the work from planting through to picking, ensuring close attention is given to every vine. Without being organic certified, Black Barn Vineyards follow the principles of organic winemaking closely to minimise any unnecessary intervention. Their fruit is selectively picked to ensure optimum quality and ripeness, while their artisan winemaking philosophy produces wines of depth, character and cellaring ability that have been rewarded with a string of accolades over the years. There is always a selection on hand, ready to delight.
