Ford was rather late to the campervan party in the UK, having served Nuggets on its German menu for decades. But now it has followed up the original with an added portion, in the form of the Nugget Plus.
Based on the L2 (long-wheelbase) Transit Custom, this new version adds 367mm to the overall length but, more importantly, it also gains a cassette toilet. That gives it a real USP in comparison with rival OEM campers, the Mercedes-Benz Marco Polo and Volkswagen California, but is it enough to make Fordâs own âvan stand out from a growing number of Custom-based conversions, including new entrants from industry stalwarts, Auto-Sleepers and Swift?
Of course, it starts off from a position of strength. Not only is the Nugget Plus marketed by Ford and sold through its own dealer network, but the basic design has been honed over a couple of decades. Itâs also built for the blue oval by Westfalia, a company that is probably without rival in terms of experience in manufacturing pop-top campers. It converted its first VW in 1951 and has been partnering with Ford since 1985.
