Australian author Steven Carroll has turned his fascination with the poet TS Eliot into a rich and productive creative enterprise. In 2009, he wrote a fictional account of Eliot and his muse Emily Hale. He followed this novel with a sequel, focusing on Eliot again and set during the, the poet is dead and the plot centres on an elderly Hale. Now he has produced the fourth instalment of his quartet of books, , in which Eliot’s first wife, Vivienne, flees from the asylum to which she was committed in 1938.
