BAZ LUHRMANN: “It’s gorgeous to see you!”

KYLIE MINOGUE: “Thank you!”

BL: “Now, I think we share a journey that’s particular. You grow up in Australia and the big wide world is out there. I read Australians back then read more magazines than any other people per capita. I think that’s to do with dreaming about the rest of the world and the possibilities of it. And now we’ve lived, and played and engaged with audiences all around the world. The school of life! The school of hard knocks! They knock you down and you get back up again.”

KM : “And if we’re talking about being from Australia, it’s one of the lessons you’re taught, whether you like it or not.”

BL: “I’ve watched you continually fly above it …”

KM : “For both of us, it probably looks like we’ve flown above it, but as we know, we take that stuff with us. Sometimes it felt like carrying the weight of some kind of culinary cringe, of our own making or just of the times. I think it’s one of the reasons so many Aussie’s find a new kind of freedom and expression overseas.”

BL: “Yeah.”

KM : “It’s an awkward one because without Strictly Ballroom, without Neighbours, without this ‘Australiana’, our paths might have been very different. I’ve understood this as best I can now, but it definitely took a few years for me to kind of address that. And ultimately, embrace it.”

BL: “In what way? Because as you said, it looks like you’re staying above all the negativity, but you carry it and there’s no question it hurts. But it also energises you. If you grew up in Los Angeles, it’s a given that there’s an entertainment industry, it’s a given that you can make a movie. People soar and do great things, but I think if you’re an Australian, there’s a feeling that it’s a real privilege to do what we do. It feels lucky for it to be real.”
