Adapt and specialise
WITH good-quality softbills having become in shorter supply since Brexit and with the difficulty of obtaining new bloodlines from Europe, specialisation is becoming standard practice with some breeders.
I have previously mentioned my friend Ade Youdell and the fact that he is concentrating on thrushes, shamas and other small insectivores. Now, another friend has decided on a similar path. Richard from Derbyshire has now decided on concentrating on his three pairs of). His African species are superb (spreo) (), purple glossy () and amethyst (violet-backed) starlings (). All these species are kept in large, well-planted outside aviaries, and he has put a lot of thought has gone into his flights being high and long to give maximum flying space.
