‘V3’ No. 67646 was at Northallerton
The ‘V3’ 2-6-2T No. 67646 and Stanier 2-6-4T 42639 (Steam World July 2022 page 46)are standing at Castle Hill Inner Junction, Northallerton, on the North Eastern Railway Hawes branch. The date is 25th April 1964; the occasion is the RCTS North Yorkshireman rail tour. The engines are waiting to back down onto the train returned from Hawes by Gresley ‘B16/2’ rebuild 61435. The train will then depart to the north via Castle Hill north curve. The colour light splitter signal for the junction is just off view to the right.

The day a ‘Grange’ went to Sheffield
Having read July 2022, I thought it may interest readers to see an extract from a Kirkby South Junction Train Register. Eric Handley (featured in the article) was on duty on Saturday August 15 1964. Nothing special in that, perhaps, until you look into what engine was hauling 1N72, which Eric accepted from Annesley North Junction at 14:55. That was the day GWR ‘Grange’ 4-6-0 No. 6858 was not replaced at Nottingham Victoria (as was normal in the Summer of 1964) but instead continued north with the train. From the TRB entry No. 6858 (not specially noted by Eric, though, ) passed Kirkby South at 15:06 and continued to Sheffield Victoria, where it clipped the platform. As there was no other spare locomotive available, the engine continued, collecting more dents to the cylinder casing at Denby Dale before being taken off and stabled at Huddersfield’s Hillhouse shed.
