A Little-Known Contender for Shortest-Lived Design The Second Gold Dollar Portrait

When it comes to collecting classic, United States gold, not many people focus on the gold dollars. Maybe it’s because they are small enough that they don’t evoke the excitement we feel when collecting bigger coins, be they copper, silver or gold. Maybe it’s the perceived rarity of the pieces in the series. Maybe there are other reasons. But because folks tend to shy away from the little $1 gold pieces, there might be some interesting collecting associated with them. Let’s be specific and look only at the second design, used from 1854 only to 1856.
