Sudanese anger against the religious and economic policies of Ottoman-Egyptian officials leads a Muslim cleric called Muhammad Ahmad to proclaim himself the ‘Mahdi’ (‘Guided One’) – the promised redeemer of the Islamic world. His ‘Mahdist’ followers revolt against the Egyptians.
