Martin and Wilson enjoy thrilling Gold Cup battle

Andy Willis (ex-Graham Hill BRM P48-7) and Charlie Martin (Cooper T53) were the big winners as two sensational Historic Grand Prix Cars Association races revisited Oulton Park’s glorious past, characterising a new-look Gold Cup. Sunday’s mesmerising catchweight battle between Martin in Paul Waine’s 2.5-litre Cooper and Sam Wilson in Clinton McCarthy’s 1500cc Lotus 18, second in Saturday’s damp opener, went all the way.

In a thrilling final lap, Wilson “threw it down the inside” into Shell Oils, but clipped the grass and slewed sideways exiting the Hislops chicane. With momentum sapped, Wilson placed his car centrally up Clay Hill, whereupon Martin charged past with two wheels on the grass. “Charlie
