wonderful pile of gardening books was left to me by a friend, and it includes a 1908 edition of Gertrude Jekyll’s. My image of the prodigious garden designer is of a well-upholstered Edwardian with a plumed hat and a terrifying eye for detail. I knew Jekyll had never had children, so the title itself was a surprise. I looked inside:
