MANX ON THE BANX

When Robin Fellingham saw his first VW-based buggy aged 13, he was easily impressed by its cartoonish lines and purposeful stance. It never occurred to him to question whether it was a ‘beach buggy’ or a ‘dune buggy’, and I am not going to tackle that question here. Instead, I am going to call it what the buggy’s inventor, Bruce Meyers, called it — the Meyers Manx Dune Buggy. As it is a Meyers Manx that will suffice.

Several decades on, Robin bought his first one. He believes his Manx was built in Australia in 1963 and shipped to New Zealand where it was owned by the same family for 32 years. When Robin bought it, the car was a bit worn to say the least. As the engine seemed to be running okay,
