Half-and Removed Relatives

Q How do you determine half-and “removed” relationships using DNA?

A Test results include “shared DNA” values, indicating how much DNA you and a match have in common. Measured in centimorgans (cM), shared DNA is used to provide an estimate of how you and a match are genealogically related to each other.

But (in one of the trickiest relationships. 50 cM of shared DNA could translate into (literally) a dozen different relationships, ranging from the second-cousin level all the way up to sixth cousins.
