Follow that river!

With our pre-Brexit wine stocks depleted, we decided that October would be a good time to visit the Moselle (Mosel) to replenish our supplies and to enjoy some autumnal walking and cycling. Outward travel costs via Eurotunnel were eased with Tesco vouchers and we were off.

There is a convenient Lidl a short walk from the aire at Bergues (about 32 miles east of the Eurotunnel terminal) and we stocked up there with those items that new regulations don’t allow for import. Our trusty stopover-finding app (see Top Tips) also indicated a free aire next to the Moselle at Sierck-les-Bains on the French border for the following night and we awoke to a fine and warm autumn morning.

Our plan was to follow the Moselle from here towards Koblenz, much of it riding along the excellent Moselle cyclepath next to the river, but also diverting into towns and castles on the way and picking up sections of the high-level footpath.

In Luxembourg we stocked up on cheaper diesel and LPG before visiting the Roman Villa at Nennig (Germany).

This area is the meeting point of France, Luxembourg and Germany and, as such, it’s steeped in history.
