I had been a retired medical doctor for about 10 years when I decided, at the age of 70, to return to university. I wanted to follow up on an idea that exercise worked as a preventive medicine against many of the diseases that I had been taught at medical school were due to ageing itself. I thought that these common diseases could be wrapped up in one parcel and called exercise-deficiency diseases for short.
