Colchicums and autumn crocuses

Both growing from corms, we look at colourful colchicums and crocuses

COLCHICUMS are some of the brightest, most colourful and most dramatic flowers you’ll see in a garden at this point in September. Although referred to as ‘autumn crocuses’, they are not related to the crocus at all. The name originates from their crocus-like, albeit larger, flowers. But, to add confusion, there are actual crocuses (also called ‘autumn crocuses’) that flower from around now – and they are not related to colchicums! You can generally tell the difference: in the main, colchicums do not produce their big fleshy leaves until late winter or early spring, while true autumn crocuses show their thin, grass-like leaves at the same time as the flowers.
