Spots, zits, pimples, acne. Whatever you call them, those red, sometimes sore bumps on your face or body can be really tough to deal with. But know this, you’re not alone: the majority of us get acne at some point in our lives. “Eighty-five per cent of people around the world will have a teenage acne episode,” says Dr Jo-Ann See, a Sydney-based dermatologist, who is on the board of several international acne associations. While teenage acne is often short-lived, spots that pop up in adulthood can be harder to shift. “Women affected by hormonal acne can be 25, 35, 40,” says See, who adds that this demographic is growing worldwide. But don’t despair. We’ve compiled your ultimate guide to zapping zits for good.

The cycle of stress causing or acute bacteria acne, which is bad bacteria,” explains See. “But there’s also some good bacteria, so we need [to control our skin’s] microbiome diversity in order to give us a balanced system.”
