Coping with THROAT CANCER

This is a general term, as there are several different tissues in the throat that can be affected by cancer

The medical name for the throat is the pharynx, which includes many different tissues, the tongue, thyroid and parathyroid glands, trachea, nasopharynx, oropharynx, larynx and oesophagus, plus lymph glands. Cancer occurs when cells develop genetic mutations, causing them to grow uncontrollably and continue living after healthy cells would normally die.

The cause is unclear but factors that can increase your risk of throat cancers include smoking, excessive alcohol use and viral infections, including human papillomavirus (HPV) and Epstein-Barr virus.
