Adults can be diagnosed with ADHD but it’s most commonly diagnosed in childhood. Symptoms often improve with age but adults commonly experience sleep and anxiety problems in particular.
If you’ve concerns about a child, or grandchild, talk to your child’s teacher, school special educational needs coordinator (SENCO) or GP. They can’t formally diagnose ADHD, but can refer for specialist assessment if necessary.
The cause is unknown. It runs in families and research suggests possible brain differences in people with ADHD. Risk factors include premature birth (before 37 weeks), low birthweight, parental smoking,
