Dominion writer/director Colin Trevorrow says he knew where he wanted this trilogy closer to go as far back as 2015’s Jurassic World. Even so, whether you’re watching the theatrical version or the new extended cut (both included here) it’s hard to believe this by-the-numbers blockbuster is the result of some grand plan.

By consigning genetically engineered theme parks to prehistory and releasing dinosaurs into the wild, Fallen Kingdom gave Trevorrow the opportunity to shift the franchise’s trajectory. Unfortunately, the big new ideas don’t stretch far beyond the welcome return of original Jurassic Park stars Laura Dern, Sam Neill and Jeff Goldblum, and unleashing an ecosystem threatening plague of gigantic GM locusts.
Otherwise it’s business as usual, especially in a final act whose “humans running from dinosaurs” action feels disappointingly flat and familiar.
