OUT 28 OCTOBER CINEMAS
Early on in Bros, when podcaster/museum curator Bobby Leiber (Billy Eichner) is discussing his failed attempt to write a script for a romantic comedy that’s centred around a gay couple, he opines his treatment by a studio exec who wanted him to deliver “something a straight guy might even like and watch with his girlfriend”.
As Eichner’s character doesn’t seem too far removed from the acerbic comedian’s own public persona, the meta elements don’t feel distracting - it’s fair enough to highlight the fact marketed as the first gay romcom from a Hollywood studio, there’s no sidestepping the fact that the film is a significant milestone, and quite the undertaking for Eichner (best known for pranky game show , and supporting roles in and ) and director/co-writer Nicholas Stoller ().
