Following the German invasion of Poland on 1 September 1939, the Nazis began destroying Jewish cemeteries and removing their matzevot (singular matzevah) or grave markers. Some were used as kerbstones or building material.
Thankfully, many of these precious monuments survive, and Polish volunteers are restoring them and the cemeteries in which they once stood. WDYTYA? Magazine reader Dorit Braun is very grateful for their work, and has a touching story to tell.
