“THERE’S something about riding to hounds that feels like it is tuning into a primitive part of my brain. The responsibility of field mastering really gives me that feeling the most,” says former Heythrop master Simon Lawrance, who has field mastered for 20 years.
“I think the similarity in some way is that both at top-level eventing and hunting is having that special relationship with the horse. One of the most special things was field mastering on a five-star horse,” said Simon, who did so from five-star rides The Bishop and Tudor Court after their eventing careers. “That was special, just because of how I knew them and feeling confident with that. And that’s a bit how I feel about my hunters I’ve had for a long while as well.”
