The past decade has seen the classic racing scene in Australia become more competitive than ever. In fact, the pointy end of the P5 or Forgotten Era Unlimited field is as competitive, if not more competitive, than our premier class modern racing is, with names like Shawn Giles, Malcolm Campbell, Robbie Phillis, Steve Martin, Cameron Donald, Brendan Roberts, Paul Young and Beau Beaton just a few of the legends.
At the Phillip Island Classic, we also had John McGuinness and Jeremy McWilliams here. These guys are international heroes and their lap times on these 30-plus year-old machines are only a few seconds off a current domestic superbike time. It’s mind blowing.
There’s one name, however, that keeps on appearing at the top of the time sheets again and again... and that name is Michael Dibb. ‘Dibbsy’ is not a retired international – he’s an enthusiastic TRX850-obsessed ex club racer who happens to gel so perfectly with Rex Wolfenden’s T-Rex Harris Honda that few in the country can catch him when he’s ‘on it’!
