LEARNING OBJECTIVES
As we approach autumn, our landscape will be bursting with a rich palette of vibrant colours for us all to enjoy, and the most dramatic display of these autumn hues can be found in the leaves on trees. They are a familiar feature in our landscape and have always been a favourite subject of mine to paint. They can be the main focal point of a painting, a complementary addition to a landscape, or an interesting backdrop They have a familiar shape and silhouette that we know and love and can provide us with many interesting challenges when we try to paint them.
In this article I want to offer advice on how to tackle painting trees, and hopefully make the whole process easier and more enjoyable for you.
1 Paint from real life or photographs
If you have read any of my previous articles or is the most effective way to experience the true colour, light, tonal values and textures of a given landscape. It forces you to paint fast, as the light is ever changing, which can make the painting of your trees an easier process. If you find the thought of this a little intimidating, why not begin by painting in your own garden, or looking out of a window from your house?
