The language of fashion
Torn: A Narrative History of Fashion BBC Radio 4, Monday 22 August
The idea that clothes can be ephemeral is intrinsic to fashion. A shirt or dress that’s all the rage this year can look horribly dated just a few months later. No wonder we don't always take fashion seriously. This, suggests Dr Gus Casely-Hayford, cultural historian and director of V&A East, is a mistake.
“Not many of us are lucky enough to work within the arts, and have close time and exposure to original pieces,” he tells BBC History Revealed, “but fashion is one of the areas in which we can all be creative, where we can all have really close contact with gorgeous things and express ourselves.”
That's true not just of countries where people take choice for granted. “There are parts ofCasely-Hayford, “yet people are still making incredible choices, just within much tighter margins.”
