Michael winced as he unstuck his shoe from the tacky floor1 of the bar and made his way2 back to the dance floor.3 As he stepped onto the flashing arena4 of party goers,5 the atmosphere changed as the DJ hit play6 on James Blunt’s You’re beautiful.7 Couples fused together across the room,8 and Michael was stood9 awkwardly on the side-lines10 watching romance wash around the club.11

It was impossible to watch12 the embracing lovers and not think of his fiancé, 13 Shona.14 She was at home, 2 months pregnant15 and at this very moment was likely finishing the calligraphy on the place cards ahead
