Idon’t really need to inform anyone that we live in deeply divided times, and the very mention of the word politics can be a prelude to deep discussion and fiery fallouts. But for today you’ll be pleased to hear I’m not talking real-world politics, but the systems that we should be looking to bring into our fantasy settings. There are many important elements of worldbuilding, and sometimes the habit as writers is that we focus a lot on landscape and place, and sometimes rather leave out the sociological elements of our settings. In fact I’d argue that considering culture and the way that society functions is more important than geography.
And just as it’s hard to reflect on our world without politics leaking in, the same consideration should be given to this angle of fantasy fiction – so let’s explore some of the things that will help bring this element of our tales to life…
