THIS SPRING, JACOB CRAWFORD walked through a lightspangled forest of beech and maple in central Vermont and came across a dark and shady patch created by a stand of towering white spruce. From the top of the tallest tree, a Yellow-rumped Warbler sang. A pair of tiny Golden-crowned Kinglets peered out from the shelter of dense needles.
