Part 5: Christmas leftovers
It’s probably safe to say that in matters of the table we are all guilty of a little exaggeration over the festive season. For the cooks amongst us, this common affliction does not begin at the table, but rather at the supermarket, or in the grocery store, or at the farmer’s market. The symptoms are evident. The first casualty is the shopping list, abandoned along with all sense of proportion. That extra pack of smoked salmon – just in case – naturally will require an additional tub of cream cheese, and perhaps one wedge of Brie just won’t suffice. And don’t forget the crackers! Potatoes are a must, an extra sack or two should cover all eventualities.
By the time we set eyes on the turkey and the gammon someone inevitably has to double back to retrieve another shopping trolley. The kids will just have to ride shotgun in the back with the 10-kilo bird because the boot’s already filled to capacity
