As I huffed and puffed, I knew my birth wasn’t going to plan.

I had been in labour for two days starting on 11 May 2004, having been admitted on 13 May, and the baby was nowhere to be seen.

‘It seems the baby has got a bit stuck,’ the midwife said after a while.

‘What?’ I cried. ‘Is she OK?’

‘She’s fine, and not in any distress,’ came the reply. ‘So, we’re going to let her come out at her own pace.’
