As 17-year-olds who had just got their learner’s licences, we drove our parents’ cars with unwarranted confidence and in a manner that would make petrolheads cringe; we rode the clutches, ground the gears and routinely revved the engines. At some stage, though, we all had to knuckle down, resist the urge to cruise with one hand on the steering wheel and adhere to proper K53 rules to pass our driver’s tests.
