Waggling her left hand, Spice Girl Melanie Brown is giddy with excitement as she shows off the dazzling pear-shaped diamond ring on her engagement finger.
“Beautiful, isn’t it?” she says, smiling as it catches the light. “He designed it all by himself, then kept it hidden in his sock drawer for three months. I still can’t believe he managed to hold a secret like that in for so long.”
The “he” in question is Rory McPhee, the gentle, calm and softly spoken 36-year-old hairdresser and entrepreneur who’s snuggled up next to Melanie as we chat and who has, she exclusively tells HELLO!, with kindness, thoughtfulness, understanding and “so much patience”, slowly but surely taught the worldfamous mum of three what it feels like to be truly loved and cherished.
Even so, Rory’s proposal, on 19 October at Melanie’s favourite hotel, Berkshire’s luxurious Cliveden House, took the singer and talentshow judge totally by surprise, they say, inviting HELLO! into the house they share – complete with cinema room, games room, reiki room, swimming pool and sauna – in their mutual home city of Leeds for their first joint interview and photoshoot.
