Recently, on The Deercast, our YouTube channel, we released a video extolling the virtues of fixed-power scopes. Both Harry (my co-host ) and I love fixed-power scopes. The reason we like them so much is partly because of their simplicity, partly because of the weight savings you can achieve with them, but mainly because of the superior quality of the glass you get by opting for a more basic scope. Counter-intuitively, by buying something with less frills you are actually getting more for your money when it comes to the glass.
Judging by the feedback we received from the video it would appear that quite a lot of people agree and are also fans of fixed-power optics. However, one of the things people consistently commented on was that there aren’t very many modern fixed-power scopes out there to choose from.
If you go looking for a fixed-power scope you’ll probably find Schmidt & Bender are one of the only manufacturers still producing new fixed-power scopes. There are plenty of second-hand
