The Volvo XC40 Pure Electric takes a familiar compact SUV body and replaces the oily bits in the base XC40 models (which start at $52,990 for the 2.0-litre turbo mild hybrid Plus B4) with batteries and an electric motor (or two).

As with any EV that started life powered by fossil fuels, there’s a price premium for the model with batteries.
