When I last renewed my aquaintance with an LMS Class 5 locomotive it was with No.5428 on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and I occasioned to note that it was one of those to come from Sir W. G. Armstrong, Whitworth & Co.Ltd. and thus but one delivery from the largest order for locomotives to be placed by a British railway company with a private builder at a time when most railways of any substance designed and built 'in house' in their own workshops.
