PIT BULLS ON TRIAL

THE family had big dreams for the little boy, hoping he’d one day become a doctor so he could care for them. He was bright, cheerful and polite, and the apple of his grandparents’ eye.

But now Keketso Innocent Saule is gone, yet another statistic of a spate of horrific pit bull attacks making grim headlines day after day after day.

Two pit bulls attacked the little boy near his home in Phomolong in the town of Hennenman in the Free State, mauling him so savagely his brain was exposed.

“This is so painful,” says Nthabeleng Saule, a relative. “It’s hard to accept that he’s gone just like that. Because of dogs.”

The three-year-old lived with his grandparents Phello and Mantwa Saule and his mother, Malefu, who are all in a state of shock and grief. “His mother isn’t coping,” Nthabeleng says. “She’s considering going to live with other relatives so she can try to forget what’s happened.”

Malefu has been clinging to her only child’s clothes but says she wants to get rid of everything that reminds her of him. “I told her she should keep one or two of his items – his clothes and his toys – but she says she can’t; she needs to
