The Soccer World Cup in Qatar

IT’S ONE of the biggest sport spectacles in the world. Every four years, soccer teams from around the globe compete to win the World Cup. This year 32 teams are battling it out in Qatar where the 2022 Fifa World Cup kicked off last month.

Though fans have been glued to their seats cheering for their favourite team, people have been talking about the World Cup for all the wrong reasons. Many believe the tournament shouldn’t be supported at all.

Here are some of the reasons for the controversy:

■ Bid bribery

An investigation into corruption within Fifa, the organisation behind the tournament, has shown that Qatar paid bribes to some of the people in charge of deciding, which country won the bid to host the event this year.

■ The heat

Not only is Qatar not well-known as a soccer-playing country, but many are amazed that it was chosen as the host country because it’s situated in a desert and gets extremely hot.
