Monterey. Pebble Beach. No matter how it’s referenced, collector car enthusiasts know the hotbed of events that pepper this section of California coastline each year, culminating with the famed Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Mid-August brings vintage racing, tours, cruises, static events, new car unveilings, and nearly a half-dozen auctions during the week, and among the latter, Bonhams Auctions was one of the first to come out of the gavel gate swinging when the company hosted its one-day sale at the Quail Lodge Equestrian Center in Carmel-by-the-Sea on August 18.
The 2022 Quail Lodge sale featured a 139-lot catalog covering a vast window of automotive history, from a 1903 Winton five-passenger Toy Tonneau Tourer all the way to a 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman GTS. American classics from the 1950s, coachbuilt Full Classics, and a plethora of European sports cars were a large part of the auction platter; as is often the case, it was a European exotic that claimed the top rung on the sales ladder: A 1955 Ferrari 250 Europa GT (discussed in more detail elsewhere in this report) that realized $2,095,000 (all sale prices include a buyer’s premium).
