NEW LINES
After the excitement of London’s CrossRail (Elizabeth Line) finally opening in phases in 2022, plus the earlier than expected arrival of the short Barking to Barking Riverside link, no brand-new heavy rail lines are due to open in 2023. However, the much-anticipated, Government-aided reopening of the currently freight-only Ashington line to passenger trains, along with six stations, is still scheduled for December (see below). In addition, three tram extensions are due to open in the spring: Blackpool North (Blackpool Transport), Newhaven (Edinburgh Trams) and Wolverhampton Station (West Midlands Metro).
