THE OFFICIAL START to spring may still be a few months away, but for me, spring garden planning begins in January. This is the month I sketch out planting plans, make lists of what I want to grow and start to place seed orders.
I also pull out my seed boxes to take inventory and make sure the packets are organized. Expired seeds are tossed and extras are donated to local seed libraries. By February, the seeds for slow-growing crops like artichokes, onions and leeks have been sown beneath my grow lights.
