he winterberry,, floods the florists at Christmas. This deciduous holly with stems smothered in red berries is hugely popular. The berries persist until spring and last for weeks indoors. So why don’t we all grow it?). Louise herself finds this plant difficult to grow. It needs moist, acid soil, is slow growing and takes time to establish. Deer adore it and – no surprise – the birds love it too. You need male and female plants for berry production and the fruit appears only on female plants. Even Louise ends up buying it in at Christmas.
