Uplifting escape

any of life’s greatest pleasures are those we don’t expect. Like a smile from a stranger or art adorning, a renowned mixed-media artist known for his photography, sculptures, mosaics, collages and more. It’s part of the 18th season of , or , a program created to activate artistic expression on the four mountains and around the resort town. The works decorating this year’s Aspen Cards include images of Johnson’s mosaics and collages, as well as photography of his towering plant installation titled “The Crisis.” Johnson’s work also graces limited-edition skis for sale at AspenX. To select which artworks to feature, Johnson went through his archives, choosing pieces that he felt reflected all of his work, which has been exhibited around the world. “Thinking about utility has always been part of my process,” he says, “and now this art will open up doors—literally through a card being scanned and a person gaining access.”
