PART 1 Stroke of genius

ONCE GRACE HUGHES has warmed up I'm An Ace in the school at Jump 4 Joy HQ in Worcestershire, Ros Canter has a chat to find out about her confidence issues. She learns that Grace and Ace have been struggling since they suffered a rotational fall while cross-country schooling recently.

“I've only just returned to jumping 80cm,” Grace says.

“In that case, we're going to build up slowly today,” says Ros.

Starting on the left rein, Grace is asked to ride Ace down the long side of the arena where two skinny brushes will soon be placed, but for the time being she just rides through the jump wings.

Once she has changed the rein, Ros instructs: “Look up into the distance, at the yellow leaves on those trees.”

Once the brush fences have been installed, Grace and Ace come around again, but Ace runs out.

“Have another go, but this time slip your reins and come in in trot,” says Ros. Ace
