BLACKWOOD

JANUARY 14-15

FORMER rivals Gavin Rees and Gary Buckland were celebrating at Markham Leisure Centre after the Welsh Novice Championship finals on the weekend of January 14-15.

Rees and Buckland shared two ferocious fights in 2014, Rees, the former WBA super-lightweight belt-holder, retiring after winning the rematch on a split points vote at Cardiff’s Motorpoint Arena.

Buckland was among a packed crowd at the Blackwood venue watching nervously as son Gary Buckland Jnr (St Josephs’s East) won the Junior title at 60kgs with a split points win over Frazer Harding (Colcot), while Rees was in the corner with Aaron Harrison (Pantside).

In one of the best of the day’s finals, Harrison out (Coedava) on a desperately close split verdict at 57kgs.
