HORSES have larger hearts compared with other mammals of similar size, probably because they are naturally more athletic and mobile than animals such as cattle or camels. They are sometimes considered a good model for human cardiac function: both elite human athletes and elite equine athletes can occasionally suffer fatal, sudden cardiac failure during strenuous exercise.
