THE MUSICIAN REFLECTS ON HIS 40-YEAR CAREER BEFORE HEADING DOWN UNDER
It’s been more than 40 years since ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic burst onto the music scene with his first song, ‘My Bologna’ – a parody of The Knack’s classic ‘My Sharona’. But despite being in the business for so long, the 63-year-old is still a little dumbfounded he isn’t “a footnote in rock history”, where many comedy music artists end up.
“Historically, a lot of people who did funny songs, they might have one fluke hit and then you never hear from them again,” he explains to WHO. “And all the people in the early ’80s told me, ‘Oh, you’re funny, your stuff is brilliant. But we want to sign an artist who is going to be around for a while.’ So the irony of my career is, here I still am!”
Not only is his career alive and thriving, with the musician one of only five music acts to have a Top 40 hit in each of the past four decades, but Yankovic’s about to bring The Unfortunate Return of the Ridiculously Self-Indulgent, Ill-Advised Vanity Tour to Oz – a show diehard Al fans won’t want to miss.
What can fans expect from the show?
Well, the title of the tour is a warning because I don’t want people to show up and be disappointed. So, let me say upfront … we are not playing the hits! We’re not doing the parodies most people know – hence the title of the tour. This tour is geared more, I suppose,
